Black factory
The black factory from 1878 is located in the Schmallenberg urban area directly on the Lenne between Inderlenne and Oberkirchen .
history
The charcoal factory was built in 1878 by the manufacturer Otto Schütte. Official operations began a year later. The former charcoal factory , which the population is still called "Black Factory" today, processed beech charcoal in particular. The charcoal in the surrounding forests was processed into charcoal powder, charcoal grits , briquettes and charcoal. During its heyday from 1920 to 1930, the factory had over 100 workers. In the last century, the factory also supplied the surrounding towns with electricity it had generated from its own water turbines.
An art forge has been located in the building since 1974. In 1998 the factory was protected as a monument . There has also been a café on the site since summer 2006.
