The Lennestadt City Museum is located in the Grevenbrück district .
building
The building was erected in 1910 as the “Royal Prussian Land Registry Office Förde” in the Olpe district . From 1939, the building then served as the administrative headquarters for the Bilstein Office for three decades and, after the municipal reform in 1969, housed the Lennestadt city administration for 15 years . With the move to the new town hall in the Altenhundem district, the building was used as a museum for the city of Lennestadt from 1993 onwards . In January 2014 the museum was expanded to include part of the renovated station building in Grevenbrück. Changing special exhibitions take place there. As part of the opening, a special exhibition was initially presented to the public from January to June 2014 on the topic of "disturbing! - Clothing and fashion in the Sauerland 1870-1970". An exhibition on the subject of “Mobility in the Lennestadt area” is currently being planned. In addition to the history of the Ruhr-Sieg route, the focus is on the challenges of current and future issues in local public transport. A partial presentation of the project is planned for mid-October 2020 (see also Grevenbrück # Economy and Transport ).
As part of the “Heimat. Future. North Rhine-Westphalia. We promote what connects people ”, funds amounting to 1.173 million euros were made available in May 2020 for the renovation and redesign of the museum in the old office building; they cover 60 percent of the estimated costs. The building will be completely redesigned according to previously agreed plans, with new exhibition rooms being created and a passenger lift installed after the extension and relocation of the city archive and library. A new concept is planned for the museum's permanent exhibition. As part of the measures, the establishment of a "Lennestadt Museum Association" (working title) is also being considered, which will link and coordinate the city's museum facilities ( mining museum Siciliaschacht , Heimatstube Saalhausen , and ZeitFenster Oedingen, among others).
Permanent exhibitions
Modern life in the Sauerland
Susanne Falk designed the concept for a city museum whose focus is the economic, social and political development of the Lennestädter area in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. The permanent exhibition “Modern Times. Vom Leben im Sauerland 1850–1955 ”extends over two floors. It presents a particularly turbulent century of Lennestädter's history in many ways. A tour begins with photos and documents about the construction and opening of the Ruhr-Sieg Railway in 1861. With the new means of transport, a new age began for the village population between Siegen and Hagen, which brought about serious upheavals in all areas of life. The permanent exhibition also documents the social and sociological changes that arose as a result of the economic and traffic-related upheaval. For example, immigration and the religious and ethnic mix of the population, the division of time according to the time clock, the possibility of working from home in the tobacco and textile industry and inhumane wage dumping.
Peperburg near Grevenbrück
In the years 1980 to 1986 members of the Grevenbrück Heimatverein under the scientific direction of Sigrid Lukanow from the Westphalian Museum of Archeology, Olpe branch, excavated the high medieval Peperburgruine near Förde-Grevenbrück and recovered hundreds of finds. The most important exhibits of the Peperburg are on display in the “treasure chamber” .
Fossil collection
A small collection of fossils - mainly compiled and pedagogically prepared by the late teacher Karl Borinski - provides information about the geological and biological development of the local area.
Classroom
The 1940s-style classroom is used as a meeting place and meeting room for groups of visitors. Educational films or slide series can also be shown here.
Painting collection of the painter Reinhold Bicher
Another exhibition in the Lennestadt City Museum are pictures by the local artist Reinhold Bicher (1895–1975) from Grevenbrück. Many motifs from home, industry or religious life are presented in the exhibition. Also pen drawings with fairy tale motifs, which he made for his children in bad times of war. On some house facades in the Sauerland you can find his plaster reliefs, which he brought into the freshly applied plaster with the help of the plasterers and signed.
Painting exhibition Peter Dommes
The artist, who was born and raised in Halberbracht in 1903, created numerous watercolors in the course of his life. He found his motifs in the Sauerland homeland, as well as in distant Italy. Many snapshots of buildings, places and nature are captured in his pictures, discreetly but still colorful. In 2004 the local tourist association commemorated this local artist in a special exhibition with numerous exhibits.
Exhibits of the month
In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the exhibits of the month are an important part of the exhibition concept. The exhibits are usually items of everyday life that are made available to the museum as loans or donations. A voluntary member of the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein deals in detail with the documentation of the nature and functionality of the respective property. The exhibits convey the living conditions of people in earlier times to those interested.
Special exhibitions
Special exhibitions are shown on special occasions. One example is the exhibition “Architectural Monuments in the Veischedetal”, which opened on “Open Monument Day” in September 2017. The total of around 40 monuments in the districts of Grevenbrück, Bonzel , Bilstein and Kirchveischede are shown and described in picture panels.
Integration of the Grevenbrück home club
At the end of 1989 a sponsorship agreement between the city of Lennestadt and the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Grevenbrück eV was signed. The city of Lennestadt created the spatial and material requirements for the museum. The Grevenbrück Heimatverein undertook to organize the regular voluntary supervisory service in the museum and to take care of the completion of the collection. This cost-saving symbiosis between the municipality and a local cultural association continues to this day. A small meeting room is available for the Heimatverein in the museum building.
