Location of Hollenbock in the Olpe district

Hollenbock is a district of the municipality of Finnentrop in the Olpe district in the southern Sauerland with 15 residents. The place is located directly on the border to Attendorn , southwest of Heggen and below the Attendorn-Finnentrop airfield on the L 853. The Milstenau , a left tributary of the Bigge, flows on the western edge of the village .

history

Since there are no early documentary mentions of the place and it was equated with the nearby Milstenau until the second half of the 19th century , its history is difficult to reconstruct. A late settlement at this point can probably be assumed. The first documented residents in Hollenbock were members of the Lennemann family, who are listed there with a farm in the original cadastre from 1831.

The place name is probably derived from the root words "cave" and "brook" (cf. Hollenbeck near Lübeck) and is therefore a symbol for the adjacent Milstenau (brook), which dries up in periods of little rain and whose water disappears in underground caves. The “Hollen”, spirits of popular belief living underground, are also discussed as the namesake in this context.

A wayside shrine commemorates the relocation of the Cologne Cathedral treasure with the relics of the Three Kings , which are said to have stopped in Hollenbock in 1794, when the bones were brought to safety from the French who were pillaging them.
