Worst painter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Worst Painter is the emergency name of an ancient Greek vase painter who worked at the end of the 5th / beginning of the 4th century BC. Was active.

Amphoriskus des Worst Painter, Paris, Louvre CA 1892

His vases, mostly small oinochoes and lekyths as well as two amphoriskoi , all come from the necropolises of Spina and Felsina ( Bologna ) , as far as the location is known .

The painter, who painted in the late red-figure style, got his name Worst Painter (= "worst painter") by John D. Beazley because of his bad painting style ("barbarous style"). Beazley counted him among the Attic vase painters , but already saw that a vase made of Spina, which corresponds entirely to this style, is Italian . However, the vases are so close to an Agrinion group of vases put together by Ian McPhee , which were created in north-west Greece under the influence of Puglia, that they should also belong to this local group.
