The Sauerland soaring is a hiking trail in the Sauerland , the North Rhine-Westphalian city Altena with in Hessen lying Korbach connects. An alternative route starts in Meinerzhagen . The total route length is around 251 kilometers. The path leads through the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge and Diemelsee nature parks . It runs mainly on ridges in the range of 400 to 800 meters above sea level. After several years of preparation, which was extended by Hurricane Kyrill , the hiking trail was officially opened on May 31, 2008 on the Schomberg near Wildewiese .

Since 2014, the Sauerland-Höhenflug-Trailrun has been taking place in Sundern-Hagen on the 2nd weekend in June. Over 800 runners take part in the trail run, which for the most part takes place on the Sauerland-Höhenflug.

The southeast section, which begins in Altena at the castle , leads along the Hegenscheid airfield via Ihmert , past the Quitmannsturm and the Hönne spring via the "Wilhelmshöhe" (western entrance to Neuenrade), Altenaffeln , passing the Schomberg tower via Wildewiese to the hiking triangle "Röhrenspring" , which is north of the Finnentrop district of Faulebutter . On the Kohlberg , just before the Quittmannsturm, a part of the hiking trail has been set up on a Vitaparcours .

The north-easterly section of the hiking trail that begins in the center of Meinerzhagen leads over the Schallershaus hiking car park past Badinghagen Castle via Grünewald , Neuenhaus / Buntelichte through the Quellenental (northeast of Hösinghausen), Ebbemoore Knüppelsteg , along the Robert Kolb Tower over the Spinne hiking car park, Windhausen , Parking lot “Auf dem Höchsten”, Plettenberg-Landemert and Lenhausen . North of Faulebutter, the path also reaches the “Röhrenspring” hiking triangle.

From here on, the Sauerland high-altitude flight runs past the transmission tower on the Estenberg via Wenholthausen , the Esloh villages of Büemke and Reiste to the Hengsiepen (Schmallenberg) homestead . Along the Somberg (616 m) the hiking trail leads over Altenilpe , west past Gelsterhagen (632 m), Am Koppen and over a steep hollow path to the chapel on Buchhagen and then to Bad Fredeburg .

From there it goes on to the Hunau Tower , Altastenberg , the Astenturm , Mollseifen and over the Siebenahorn (730 m) to the observation towers Ziegenhellen and Heidekopfturm . Hallenberg , Liesen and Medelon are the next points on the route. The path now continues through the natural Orketal to the high altitude village of Küstelberg and to Titmaringhausen . From there it goes to the Diemel spring and over the high heath of the Kahler Pön to Düdinghausen , Nieder-Schleidern and Goldhausen . The Georg Viktor observation tower is the last point on the route before the Sauerland high-altitude flight ends in the old town of Korbach .

The high-altitude flight route is supplemented by numerous access routes. Circular hiking trails lead through the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht , over the Kahler Asten and the Nordhelle .

The Sauerland-Höhenflug was awarded the second most beautiful hiking trail in Germany in the category of long-distance hiking trails in 2009 by the specialist magazine "Wandermagazin".
