The ruins of Dippach Castle are on the edge of the village of Dippach , a district of the Maroldsweisach community in the Haßberge district in Lower Franconia . The gate tower and the surrounding walls are still preserved from the small former moated castle .

history

The small castle originally belonged to the Counts of Henneberg , then to the Saxon Wettins . As vassals were Redwitz and Fuchs of pig Berghaupten called. In 1665 the von Rußwurm family acquired the facility, which was sold on to the von Hutten zu Birkenfeld family in 1725 . At the beginning of the 18th century the residence is said to have been in good condition.

description

View of the enclosing wall

The ruin is a good example of one of the rather modest seats of the lower nobility in Franconia that used to be so numerous . Actually, the complex was more of a lightly fortified courtyard that would not have withstood a serious attack for long.

The rectangular enclosing walls (25 × 32 meters) are still up to six meters high. On this base, which has neither window openings nor loopholes , probably formerly sat upper floors made of wood or half-timbered . The castle used to be surrounded by a moat at some distance , of which only a few traces can be found today.

Access was granted by an approximately twelve-meter-high, barrel-vaulted gate tower. On the inside there is a rectangular entry opening above the passage, on the outside the former schoolhouse is built on. The rectangular openings interpreted as loopholes in the inventory tape are more likely to have served for exposure.

Only the remains of walls, the beginnings of intermediate walls and beam holes have survived from the interior development.
