Gleusdorf Castle was first mentioned in 1151 in a document with which an "Eribert de Chlubisdorf" gave the hamlet of "Liuzileber" (Lützelebern) to St. Petrus in Bamberg, patron of the Banz Monastery .

In the High Middle Ages, Gleusdorf belonged to the Banz monastery and was given as a fief to monastic servants . From the 14th to the 16th century, the Lords of Fulbach sat at the castle , which was damaged in the Peasants' War in 1525 . Sebastian von Fulbach's widow died in 1576. In 1582 Georg and Valentin von Fulbach on Gleusdorf can still be found. After the line died out, the fiefdom fell back to the monastery and was converted into a bailiwick office.

Today's palace building was completed around 1770. In the course of secularization , the property fell to Bavaria in 1804. The newly founded Bavarian regional court Gleusdorf was housed there for a short time and was relocated to Baunach in 1808 . Subsequently, private individuals acquired the palace buildings, which have since changed hands several times.

In 1990 the facility was rededicated as a senior citizens' residence and used as a closed nursing home. For this purpose, some new buildings were added to the old stock. Modernization work and a roof renovation were carried out in 2016. In 2016, the public prosecutor's office investigated the management of the home, among other things for the mistreatment of wards. Five unexplained deaths were also investigated. In 2017 the home had 61 residents. The facility was closed after the investigation began in early 2019. This decision was overturned by the Bavarian Administrative Court. The senior citizens' residence is being continued today under the new management. The trial before the Bamberg Regional Court, which has been ongoing since mid-July 2019, is scheduled for 27 days and 43 witnesses are to be heard. A judgment is planned for January 2020.

Building description

The three-storey palace building is stylistically at the transition from late Rococo to early classicism. The unplastered sandstone building is structured by profiled window frames and cornices. Above the main portal on the east side is the coat of arms of the Banzer abbot Valerius Molitor. A three-axis attachment with a tail gable and spherical vases was placed in front of the low mansard roof on the portal side. A brick gate with sandstone pillars and iron bars allows entry into the castle district.

Inside, some simple stucco ceilings and the rich sandstone parapet of the double-flighted staircase are reminiscent of the former bailiff's seat, which was otherwise greatly changed by the later changes in use.
