The Ebersberg castle ruins are the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle on the Schlossberg near Zell am Ebersberg , a district of the Knetzgau municipality in the Haßberge district in Bavaria .

history

The castle was built in 1115 by Bishop Otto von Bamberg , probably as accommodation and resting place for the clergy of the two dioceses of Würzburg and Bamberg . The castle was also the administrative seat of the episcopal property around Zell and was a customs post.

The castle was destroyed for the first time in 1525 in the course of the Peasant War by Hans Luft and then rebuilt. In 1634 the castle was finally destroyed by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War .

After farmers in Zell had removed the remains of the castle wall to build houses by the beginning of the 20th century, only a few remains of the walls and foundations remained. In 1972 the castle area was expanded into a lookout point by the Steigerwald Nature Park .
