Old castle

The old castle is an abandoned hilltop castle 2950 meters east of the Altenstein part of the Maroldsweisach market in the Franconian Haßberge ( Bavaria ). Another ring wall called the Alte Burg is only 150 meters to the west .

Geographical location

The place of the abandoned valley slope castle is 392  m above sea level. NN over a tiny lake and uses in the northwest the steep drop of an approximately five to seven meter high sandstone formation on the slope of the Gehrenberg , which rises there only slightly to the southeast.

history

The ramparts , officially dated as early medieval , could also have been a high medieval aristocratic seat. As with many ramparts and castle stables, there is no documentary evidence or other sources on the time and history.

The castle was measured and topographically recorded in 1970 by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation ( Eugen Ixmeier ). Björn-Uwe Abels published the plan in 1979 .

description

The semicircular castle area is separated from the slope by a rampart up to two meters high with a trench . The inner surface of the two-part system is approx. 70 × 120 meters. The wall runs in the northwest down the slope to the lake, there is also a ditch in front of it. The inner surface of the outer bailey is severely fissured by some deep pits.

The main castle (approx. 30 × 60 meters) is raised two to four meters in the manner of a tower hill ( Motte ) in the northwest corner. To the northwest, the outer wall is led around the rock plateau in such a way that there is an eight-meter-wide neck ditch between them .

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the ground monument as a presumably early medieval ring wall under monument number D 6-5830-0009.
