Bettenburg is a small Renaissance - Schloss in the district of Haßberge ( Free State of Bavaria about three kilometers northeast of the city) Hofheim and one kilometer from their district Manau away, whose district is one of them. Because of its location, visible from afar between the hills of the Haßberge , the castle is also called the "landmark of the Haßberge".

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1231. In fact, it is likely to be older, as it is located directly on Rennweg , a formerly important military and trade route between Sulzfeld (in Grabfeld) and Hallstadt (and part of a connection between Fulda and Bamberg ) stands on the ridge of the Haßberge and was part of a chain of defenses that were supposed to protect this connecting road.

In the Peasants' War in 1525 bed castle was destroyed and in 1535, led by Knight Balthasar Steward rebuilt. At that time, the rebels had to raise damages of 10,632 guilders .

Until 1940 the castle served as the residence of the noble Truchseß family, who are still the owners of the castle today. After that it was a country school home, a children's home deportation center and a retirement home of the city of Würzburg . In the 1970s the castle was also operated as a hotel. From 1977 to 2009 a rehabilitation center of the Baden-Württemberg State Association for Prevention and Rehabilitation gGmbH (bw lv) was housed there. The therapeutic facility moved to the nearby Eichelsdorf Castle at the end of 2009 .

The interior of the castle was renovated in 2010. The new tenants have been running it as a seminar and conference center since then.

etymology

The etymology of the name Bettenburg is not clear. The word bed comes from the Old High German betti and is related to bed and floor, it occurs in the terms river bed and track bed. In the case of place names such as Bettenhausen or Bettendorf , this indicates a lowland area nearby. At Bettenburg, there is a cut in the Haßberge and thus the Rennweg, which could explain the origin of the name.
