The Rennweg in the Haßbergen is a little brother of the famous Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest . Just like the Rennsteig, this ancient traffic connection also runs on a mountain ridge, that of the Haßberge , in a north-west - south-east direction.

In the western part of the Haßberge it is called Rennweg , in the eastern part as Hohe Straße or Hochstraße . In between lies the Manau Valley in the Hofheim area .

The nature of the way as the ridge trail (salt-trading from the grave field of Bamberg ), as well as prehistoric finds and plants at or near the lead to the conclusion that it is a since the time of the Celts committed (Ortes-) way is. At one end of the Rennweg, above Kleinbardorf and above Hofheim, there are two ancient fortifications in strategically favorable locations, between which the Rennweg is the shortest connection. In addition, the Rennweg was the shortest connection between the ancient settlement areas in Grabfeldgau, in the area of Hofheim and near the confluence of the Baunach in the Main near Hallstadt / Bamberg.

At the time of Charlemagne , the Rennweg represented a ethnic border between the western, Frankish-settled border region of the Frankish Empire and the eastern areas inhabited by the Slavs and Wends.

In the summer of 1796, this connection was still being used by French and Austrian soldiers as a route for deployment or retreat.

The old connection is mentioned in a chronicle about the city and the office of Königsberg: “ An ancient road ran from Fulda to Bamberg. Coming from Bad Königshofen , she climbed the Bun near the Wildberg castle ruins and ran on the ridge that remained southeast of the Baunach above Königsberg to Röslau, [...] ”.

The Nassacher Höhe with 512 m above sea level. NN is on Rennweg. The Burgstall Rottenstein and the Schwedenschanze are in the immediate vicinity of the Rennweg. From a multiple crossroads, the so-called Seven Ways , a path leads to a lookout tower on the Schwedenschanze.

The Rennweg is marked as a hiking trail with a black R throughout. Its length is around 55 km. It only affects a few places, which can be a problem for hikers because of the overnight stays. Mountain bikers can cover the entire route in one day. Hofheim and Königsberg are two places worth seeing just a few kilometers off the route.
