Maroldsweisach Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maroldsweisach castle is a two-storey Mansarddachbau in the center of the market Maroldsweisach in the district Haßberge ( Lower Franconia ). The former aristocratic residence was extensively renovated at the end of the 20th century and is now home to some private apartments.

history

overall view

In the 13th century a local noble family named themselves after the place. The Stein von Altenstein , whose ancestral castle has been preserved a few kilometers south as a mighty ruin ( Altenstein Castle ), appear as successors to these Lords of Wisach . Both families held the property as a fiefdom of the Würzburg monastery . The old Maroldsweisacher moated castle is said to have been destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants' War.

In 1768 the barons Horneck von Weinheim acquired the von den Stein manor. The family had already been enfeoffed with the Maroldsweisacher tithe in 1765. The construction of today's castle, which may have started under the stone, is to begin around this time. A second upper floor, which was probably planned, was dispensed with for cost reasons, so that the palace building today looks strangely disproportionate and unfinished. The last noble owners were the Counts Bentzel-Sturmfeder-Horneck , who, however, sold the property - inherited from the barons - to the Catholic parish in the last century. The community commissioned some renovations. The former palace chapel has also been expanded and adapted to the needs of modern worship services. Around 1980, the then mayor of the market bought the property and began extensive renovation measures.

Building description

The elongated, two-storey palace building rests on a basement, which compensates for the sloping terrain on the rear, but does not appear on the entrance side. The simple external structure of rusticated corner pilasters and a simple cornice between the floors refers to early classicism . The facade is only enlivened by the three-axis central projection and the two-axis corner projections. The simple window openings on the ground floor are rounded off with a basket arch, while on the upper floor they are straight. The simple main portal on the ground floor of the central risalite allows entry.

The interior surprises with the rich rococo decoration of the chapel and the main hall on the ground floor. The castle chapel has a stucco ceiling from the construction period with shellwork shapes, the hall ceiling and wall decorations made of shellwork and latticework, flowers and pendants made of musical instruments.
