Truckers with a Heart is a 1999 Australian comedy directed by Antony J. Bowman and starring Hugh Jackman and Claudia Karvan . He is also known under the original title Paperback Hero .
action
The film is set in Australia. Trucker Jack Willis wrote a romance novel and sent it to a publisher in Sydney. Since he did not want to endanger his image as a "tough trucker", he had given the name of a long-time friend, the flying enthusiast Ruby Vale. She is permanently engaged to Hamish - the wedding has so far failed because of the money. When Jack's novel begins to rise to the bestseller, the publisher wants to carry out some promotional campaigns - with the alleged author. Jack can persuade Ruby to play along with the prospect that the publisher will organize her dream wedding. He pretends to be Ruby's manager. Of course, the hoax does not go undetected and both Ruby's wedding and Jack's future as a writer become questionable. In the end, not only does the true identity of the bestselling author become clear to the public, Jack's secret love for Ruby is also revealed and finally reciprocated by her.
Genre, narrative style
The film tells the story in an unspectacular way and focuses entirely on what happens with and between the characters. A remarkable amount of space has been given to the flight scenes with Ruby, which contribute a not inconsiderable part of the mood of the film.
The German subtitle "Ein Mann, ein Wort", which is printed on the cover of the DVD, is a bit misleading: Although the content is related to the film, the sound of "hard Western" clearly arouses false associations. A little closer to the romantic, slightly comedic character of the film is the title Trucker mit Herz , under which the strip came on German television.
Remarks
The film is probably best known among Hugh Jackman fans (Jackman made his screen debut here), most of the reviews that can be found on the Internet come from this environment. The film was quite successful in Australia and Great Britain: In the first week it reached number 6 in the box office.
Worth seeing: Angie Milliken as the eccentric publisher Ziggy Keane. She not only gives her role the comic element that is indispensable for such films, she also embodies some key ideas in a believable way, which give the film a dimension that goes well beyond the "clutter".
