The Fuchskaute is an extinct volcano and at 657.3  m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain in the Westerwald and the Westerwaldkreis . It is located in the area of ​​the Rhineland-Palatinate local community Willingen ; Parts of the eastern slope are in Hessen .

The name Fuchskaute refers to a place where the fox has its Kaute ( fox cave). The mountain is part of a basalt plateau.

The Fuchskaute rises in the High Westerwald , a high plateau of the Westerwald , which belongs to the Rhenish Slate Mountains . It is located about half a straight line between Bad Marienberg in the west and Breitscheid in the east with peaks located in the district of the northwest of the summit contained 1.3 Willingen . The border with Hesse runs on its eastern slope near Waldaubach and that with North Rhine-Westphalia just under 3 km north of the mountain summit; 3.2 km north-northeast of the Fuchskaute lies the triangle of Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Mountain height

The upper course of the Haigerbach, also known as Winterbach , rises on the northern slope of the Fuchskaute with the Ketzerbach and the Aubach , which flows east of the Fuchskaute, on the northern slope of the Altenberg ( 651.4  m ) to the south-southeast ; both are tributaries of the dill . On the western slope of the north-western neighboring mountain Rompf ( hull ; 636.6  m ) lies the source of the Nister (Great Nister) that runs west of the Fuchskaute and also the Weierbach on its northwest slope .

Protected areas

On the eastern flank of the Fuchskaute up to the southern of its two peaks, the Fuchskaute nature reserve ( CDDA no. 163164; designated in 1984; 40.16  hectares in size) stretches to protect heathland . In large areas of the mountain with two peaks are part of the European bird sanctuary Westerwald (VSG No. 5312-401;. 289.48  square kilometers ) in Rhineland-Palatinate and low surface portions in the east, in the area of the Hessian community Waldaubach , those of the bird sanctuary High Westerwald (VSG no. 5314-450; 76.1081 km²). On and on the basalt plateau of the Fuchskaute, the harsh climate and a traditional way of using pastures have created meadows that are otherwise typical for the Alps . Almost 300 species of flowering plants and trees, 300 species of butterflies and almost 50 different species of birds were counted here.

There is a cross-country skiing area with groomed trails on the Fuchskaute . Until 1975 (or 1980) there were regular grass track races with motorbikes . The races were discontinued due to environmental pollution. The Gasthaus Fuchskaute is located on the southern hill of the southern summit .

In the vicinity of the Fuchskaute there are well-developed and marked hiking trails over a length of around 250 km , which lead to the nature reserves Wacholderheide , the Holzbach Gorge and the Krombachtalsperre . The Westerwaldsteig and the southern loop of the Rothaarsteig also run over the Fuchskaute .

Towers

There used to be an observation tower on the Fuchskaute , from which you could enjoy the view of the Westerwald, among other things. The amateur radio service operates two transmission towers on the southern tip of the Fuchskaute .
