The Holzbach breakthrough nature reserve is named after a breakthrough valley of the Holzbach brook through the basalt of the Westerwald . It is located between the Dappricher Hof belonging to Seck and Gemünden near Westerburg in the Rhineland-Palatinate part of the Westerwald. The area is also called the Holzbach Gorge .
Nature reserve
The Holzbach breakthrough was designated as a nature reserve on December 11, 1961 by the Montabaur district government . This protected status replaced a regulation issued by the Wiesbaden district government in November 1933 and is one of the oldest nature reserves in the Westerwald.
The protected area has a size of approx. 21 ha, extends in a width of about 100 meters on both sides of the Holzbach and is located in the Westerwaldkreis in the districts of Gemünden and Seck . The R 29 circular hiking trail begins near Gemünden.
