The Haidenweiher is located approx. 1.3 kilometers southwest of the local community Dreifelden in the Westerwaldkreis and is the second largest pond in the Westerwald lake district with approx. 30 hectares of water . It is connected to the Dreifelder Weiher by a drainage ditch and is now used for rearing fish. The pond, declared a nature reserve in 1979 , is surrounded by dense forest. Rare bird species, especially marsh birds, are now nesting on its banks.

history

Emergence

The Haidenweiher, created by Count Friedrich zu Wied, was first mentioned in 1691.
Even then, the lake, like the other lakes in the Westerwald lake district , was used for fish farming , which is still in operation today.

origin of the name

The name of the pond indicates the state of the landscape at the time it was created: Due to the intensive and centuries-long pasture use by the neighboring villages, a pasture and heather landscape developed around the lake .
Due to this circumstance, the lapwing, which has become rare today, often nested in this region. That is why his eggs were collected and sold as a delicacy to the court kitchen in Neuwied.

Nature reserve

The Haidenweiher was designated as a nature reserve on January 20, 1979 by the Koblenz district government . This was preceded by a protection from August 1, 1976. The reserve has a size of about 35 hectares and is located in the district of Steinebach an der Wied .

The protection purpose is the preservation of the wetland with its water areas, shallow water zones, swamp areas and subsequent moist grassland areas as a location for rare plants and as a habitat for threatened and rare animal species, especially rare bird species, for scientific reasons.
