The Malberg nature reserve is named after the Malberg near Montabaur in the Rhineland-Palatinate part of the Westerwald .

The volcano rises like a molehill over the plain of the Montabaur Basin. In contrast to the surrounding area, the mountain consists of phonolite . The rock, which is around 30 million years old, forms a sea ​​of rocks on the summit with numerous crevices, caves and rockfalls.

Nature reserve

The Malberg was designated as a nature reserve on January 19, 1971 by the Koblenz district government . This was preceded by a protection from December 6, 1961. The reserve has a size of approx. 96 hectares and is located in the Westerwaldkreis in the districts of Ötzingen , Leuterod and Moschheim .
