The junk stones , also called junk stone , near Emmerzhausen in the Altenkirchen district , Rhineland-Palatinate ( Germany ), are a field of pillars and blocks made of feldspar basalt in the Hellerbergland . The rock formation is designated as an approximately 0.3 hectare large area natural monument (FND).

geography

location

The junk stones are about 1.2 kilometers (km) northeast of Emmerzhausen, 3.6 km southwest of Burbach and 2.6 km northwest of Lippe , both of which are in the neighboring district of Siegen-Wittgenstein in North Rhine-Westphalia . The rocks reach up to the summit of 613  m above sea level, which is close to the district boundary NHN high mountain junk stones .

Rock formations in the area

The basalt formation Druidenstein near Herkersdorf , the natural monuments Großer and Kleiner Stein near Burbach (two basalt block fields), and the rock formation Teufelskanzel near Bad Laasphe are located in the vicinity of the junk stones .

Description and geology

The junk stones form several small basalt cliffs, with an underlying column and block field made of feldspar basalt, which broke through the basement here in the Tertiary .

The junk stones are basaltic peaks ( lava domes ) that were formed in the tertiary era . Unlike in the High Westerwald , where a closed basalt cover has formed, only individual spring dome ( cryptodome ) formed here . From the type of rock group, three different effusions ( volcanic rock ) can be clearly reconstructed, which pushed through the Devonian basement from below .

Several trees grow on the northeast slope of the junk stones, the southwest slope is completely forested.

hike

A narrow path leads to the Trödelsteine, which is part of the 10.2 km long Rothaarsteig- spur Trödelsteinpfad . The European long-distance hiking trail E1 leads past . At the E1, about 250 m from the rock formation, there is the An den Trödelsteinen refuge , which was built in 2004 by members of the Westerwald Association . The Hellerhöhenweg (H) and the Siegerland-Höhenring also pass by .
