A Transponder Mandatory Zone (TMZ) is an area of the airspace in which all aircraft must carry and use a transponder with automatic altitude transmission. For visual flights (VFR) the transponder must be set to code 7000.

TMZs were established in the vicinity of regional airfields in order to protect incoming and outgoing IFR and VFR traffic. They are part of the controlled airspace E (Echo) , so air traffic control clearances are not required for VFR flights during the day.

From April 2017, transponder codes with associated radio frequencies will be published on the ICAO card for the respective TMZ. When staying in the TMZ, it is strongly recommended that these transponder codes be switched - in conjunction with listening to the relevant frequency. (NfL 1-958-17)
