As Aerodrome Traffic Zone ( ATZ , aerodrome traffic zone ) is known in the aviation an airspace of defined dimensions, which to an uncontrolled airport is established around to the air traffic to protect its environment. An ATZ may only be flown in for the approach or departure from the respective airport; a mere flight through is not permitted.

Basically, the rules of the airspace class in which the zone is located apply in an ATZ. However, flights into the ATZ and take-offs and landings within the ATZ require approval from air traffic control or the flight controller . The zone only exists within the service times published in the AIP .

Germany

In Germany, this task is usually carried out by a control zone . In rare cases, however, an ATZ can also be set up here, for example around the Tannheim airfield during the Tannkosh Fly-In 2011. On March 31, 2016, an ATZ was permanently set up at Egelsbach airfield .

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom , an ATZ is a cylindrical airspace that extends up to 2,000  feet above the level of the airfield. Its radius is usually 2  NM , especially if there are runways with a length of more than 1850 m, it can also be 2.5 NM.
