geography

The largest ball of rope in the world

US Highway 12 runs through Darwin, the place being halfway between Litchfield in the west and Dassel in the east .

history

Land surveyors from Dubuque (Iowa) made the first spatial classifications on paper, naming the place "Stella City". When the place was built in 1858, it was called "Rice City" in honor of Edmund Rice , then president of a railway company. In 1869 the place was renamed in honor of Electus Darwin Litchfield (1817-1888). He was a shareholder in the same railway company whose line from Saint Paul (Minnesota) had been expanded to this point in the 1860s.

Attractions

In the village there is a large rope - ball that is said to be the largest in the world. It is covered by a wooden hut with Plexiglas windows and weighs approx. 7900 kg with a diameter of approx. 4 m and was made by Francis A. Johnson over 29 years of work. In 1989 Weird Al Yankovic released a song called "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota" on his album "UHF - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Other Stuff" for the ball.
