Gustav Lange (painter)

Johann Gustav Lange (* 1811 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † April 6, 1887 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

For a long time he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . As early as 1831 he exhibited “a small landscape” there. In the years 1832/1833 he was a student in Johann Wilhelm Schirmer's landscape class . In Düsseldorf, where his son, who later became the landscape and poultry painter Fritz Lange , was born, he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . Lange was close friends from his early academy times with the landscape painter Andreas Achenbach , who described his feelings and encounters from his first trip to Italy (1843–1845). Lange specialized in depicting winter mood landscapes in romantic light.
