Olle Holmquist

Bert Olav "Olle" Holmquist (born November 15, 1936 in Skellefteå ; † March 26, 2020 ) was a Swedish jazz and entertainment musician ( trombone , tuba ) who had been active in the European music scene since the 1960s.

Act

Holmquist first learned the tuba as an autodidact; then he switched to valve trombone and finally to slide trombone. At the beginning of the 1960s, he was already working with Quincy Jones , Nils Lindberg and Bengt-Arne Wallin , with whom he was in the recording studio. In 1963 he became a member of the Radio Sweden big band . In the next few years he also worked with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson .

In 1971 Holmquist moved to Switzerland and became a member of the DRS Dance Orchestra; In 1976 he moved to Berlin, where he was part of the RIAS Dance Orchestra under the direction of Horst Jankowski . In 1978 James Last brought him to his orchestra, to which he was a member until 2013. He also worked with Kai Warner , Freddy Quinn , Jerry Lewis , Manhattan Transfer , Ulrich Roski and Lill Lindfors . At home in Sweden he accompanied Monica Zetterlund and Tommy Körberg , among others ; he was also a member of the Melodifestivalen Orchestra . He later played in the TV show Allsång in the Skansens Orchestra . With his Sweden Allstars he recorded the songs of ABBA .

In recent years, Holmquist suffered from Alzheimer's disease and lived in a retirement home. There he was infected with SARS-CoV-2 and died of the consequences of COVID-19 .
