Northvolt AB is a Swedish company that develops and produces lithium-ion batteries for electric cars and energy storage. It was founded in 2015 under the name SGF Energy by Peter Carlsson , a former Tesla manager. Northvolt currently employs around 500 people from 58 nations.

history

Northvolt was founded by two former top managers at the electric car manufacturer Tesla, the Swede Peter Carlsson, who was Tesla's purchasing manager until 2015, and Paolo Cerruti, who joined Northvolt in February 2016 and is now Chief Operating Officer.

A first feasibility study was commissioned in 2016 with the support of the Swedish Energy Agency. The aim was to set up a gigafactory, i.e. a battery production facility for the automotive industry in Sweden. In 2017 the company announced that this factory was to be built in Skellefteå and that the production capacity would be up to 100,000 battery systems per year. The total financing requirement for Northvolt Ett at this point in time was given as around 4 billion euros.

In May 2019, the European Investment Bank (EIB) announced that it would support the expansion of production capacities at the Northvolt Ett plant with a financial contribution of 350 million euros.

In December 2019, Northvolt concretized its plans for recycling batteries under the Revolt name. A first recycling plant is to be built at the Northvolt Ett plant by 2022. Template: future / in 2 yearsThe long-term goal is to gradually increase the recycling rate in the production of new batteries to 50 percent. A pilot system to test the processes is planned for 2020 at the development site in Västerås .

Locations

The company has been based in Stockholm since it was founded . In addition, the company has set up a development site and three production sites in Sweden, Poland and Germany since 2016.

Northvolt Labs

In April 2018, construction began on Northvolt Labs, the company's development center in Västerås , a city about 100 km west of Stockholm . In addition to the development of products, employees are also qualified here and the series production of products is promoted in a pilot plant.

Northvolt One

In June 2018, Northvolt received planning permission for the company's first production facility, which is called Northvolt Ett (Swedish one). It will be built in Skellefteå , a city in northeast Sweden. Renewable energy sources are available on a large scale in this region, which promotes the sustainability of battery production at this location. The production of battery cells is to start in 2021 with an annual capacity of 32 GWh and increase to 40 GWh by 2024.

Northvolt Two

Northvolt Zwei is a 50/50 joint venture with Volkswagen AG that is to be established in Salzgitter . In September 2019 it was announced that Northvolt wanted to set up a battery production facility there with the German automotive company.

The plant is to be built in the course of 2020 and start producing lithium-ion batteries from 2023. The annual capacity of the factory will initially be 16 GWh Template: future / in 4 yearsand later increased to 24 GWh. With the signing of the contract, Volkswagen AG also took over around 20 percent of Northvolt's shares and received a seat on the supervisory board. Stefan Sommer , Volkswagen’s Board Member for Procurement, has held this seat since then.

Volkswagen will build the plant itself and then rent it to the joint venture. 450 million euros are being invested for this.

Northvolt Battery Systems

In October 2016, Northvolt announced that assembly for battery systems was planned in Gdansk . The plan was to assemble the battery cells from the Swedish factory in Poland into battery systems. The prototype production started in December 2018 with a planned capacity of 10,000 modules per year. The site is operated jointly with South Bay Solutions, a US specialist in the control and thermal management of battery systems.
