After several professional positions within the Continental Corporation, most recently as Senior Vice President EBS Customer Center , in summer 2008 he moved to ZF Sachs AG in Schweinfurt as a member of the Board of Management, Chassis Division. In July 2018, Volkswagen AG announced that Sommer would be appointed to the Board of Management for procurement with effect from January 1, 2019 at the latest.
