Francisco Javier García Sanz (born May 6, 1957 in Madrid ) is a Spanish automobile and sports manager . From 2001 to April 2018 he was a member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG for the Procurement division and from 2009 to April 2018 Chairman of the Supervisory Board of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH .

Life

Garcia Sanz completed his school education in 1974 with the secondary school leaving certificate and completed vocational training as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk at Rewe Handelsgesellschaft in Mainz-Hechtsheim by 1976 . He then attended the business administration academy of the Wiesbaden Gabler publishing house .

In 1979 he was initially employed as a purchasing clerk at Adam Opel AG in Rüsselsheim , switched to General Motors España in 1980 as purchasing coordinator and returned to Rüsselsheim in 1983 to work as a group leader in purchasing at Opel. From 1986 to 1992 he held several managerial positions at Opel and General Motors.

As part of the change of José Ignacio López de Arriortúa for Volkswagen AG in 1993 and Sanz joined the employers and managed the Electric / Electronic Procurement at Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg. In 1996 he became a member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand , on July 1, 2001 of Volkswagen AG, both in the Procurement division. Furthermore, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of SEAT, SA (Barcelona) since June 2007 and was Chairman of the Spanish Automobile Manufacturers Association ANFAC from 2008 to 2012 .

In addition to his work in the automotive sector, Sanz had been a member of the Supervisory Board of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH since July 1, 2004 and its chairman since June 1, 2009. The University of Stuttgart awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2008 on the proposal of the Business Administration Institute .

In April 2018, Sanz left Volkswagen at his own request. He waived his severance payment of 5 million euros. His successor was Stefan Sommer on January 1, 2019 . Ralf Brandstätter, who is responsible for the operational business of the Volkswagen core brand, took over the post until the beginning of 2019.

Also in April 2018, Sanz left his position as Chairman of the Supervisory Board at VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH, and was succeeded by Frank Witter, Chief Financial Officer of Volkswagen AG .

criticism

In October 2014, Volkswagen AG had to pay a fine of two million euros because a service contract with T-Systems for the maintenance of computer systems was only extended after T-Systems had announced the extension of a sponsorship contract with VfL Wolfsburg. One million euros had to be paid because of the criminal pandemic between Volkswagen AG and VfL Wolfsburg, and one million euros because Garcia Sanz, contrary to duty, had not taken any precautions against such crimes .

At the end of 2018, Sanz took on a role in clearing up the emissions scandal , he had dealt with the processing of the diesel issue.
