The Melodifestivalen 2021 to the Swedish finals for the 2021 Euro Vision Song Contest to be. It will be the 61st edition of the competition organized by the public television company Sveriges Television (SVT).

format

concept

For the eighteenth time, the semi-finals will take place in different locations in Sweden. There are 28 entries, which are distributed over four semifinals, so that seven entries are presented per semifinals. In two voting rounds, the spectators decide who qualifies for the final and who can compete again in the Andra Chansen (German: Second Chance). In each semi-final, the first two entries with the most audience votes qualify directly for the final. Those contributions that take third and fourth place appear a second time in the Andra Chansen program . There the candidates then compete against each other in duels and whoever can collect the most audience votes qualifies for the final. Then twelve performers appear in the finale.

The production team in 2021 will include at least Karin Gunnarsson (producer) and Christer Björkman (deputy producer), who will be in charge of his last Melodifestivalen in 2021.

A new voting system was introduced in 2019 and will be used again in 2021.

In the semifinals, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 point / s can be distributed per group. In the final, each group can then distribute 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points. In order to create a balanced relationship with the international juries in the final, their number will be reduced from 11 to 8. 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point / s are also awarded to each international jury. In the Andra Chansen program , each group can then distribute one point to their favorites. The interpreter with the most points per duel qualifies for the final. In the event of a tie, the artist with the most total votes wins. In this way, the system remains that in the semifinals and in the Andra Chansen round the spectators determine the result and in the final 50% of the audience and 50% of an international jury decide the winner.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is unclear whether the Melodifestivalen can take place again in different locations in Sweden in 2021. Alternatively, a relocation of the shows to a studio or a small event hall is planned. Despite a possible relocation, a show on the scale of the past few years is planned.

Choice of contribution

From August 24 to September 13, 2020, 11:59 a.m., composers have the opportunity to submit a contribution to the Swedish television station SVT. From these 28 contributions will be selected. The selection is made according to the following selection process:

• 14 contributions will be selected from all submitted contributions.
• 13 contributions are selected at the invitation of SVT.
• The winner of the P4 Nästa 2020 receives a starting place for the Melodifestivalen 2021.

As in previous years, at least 50% of all contributions must be written by female composers. SVT announced another rule change for 2022: According to this, at least one female composer or lyricist should be involved in contributions that have been written by more than one author.

From March 1 to April 1, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. ( CEST ), composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to Swedish radio Sveriges Radio (SR). Each P4 local station selects a candidate in a local selection process between May and July 2020. Sveriges Radio will put together a jury that will select eight performers from all the winners who will take part in the finals of the P4 Nästa on September 12, 2020. According to information from Sveriges Radio, around 1,150 contributions have been submitted. On August 17, 2020, Titti Schultz and Josefin Johansson were presented as moderators.

Local preliminary decisions

From mid-May 2020, the local radio stations of P4 organized their own local preliminary decisions. P4 Västernorrland or P4 Jämtland traditionally selected their contribution as the first local radio station, P4 Blekinge selected the last of the 25 contributions as the last radio station at the end of July 2020. In each local preliminary round, five performers competed against each other with their own song. A jury and the audience decided half the winner. The audience voting took place by SMS three weeks before the respective final up to the final itself. Each viewer could vote up to ten times. In the event of a tie, the audience decided the winner by voting. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the programs took place without viewers.
