The Melodifestivalen 2016 was the Swedish finals for the Euro Vision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm ( Sweden ). It was the 56th edition of the competition organized by the Swedish broadcaster SVT . The winner of the competition was Frans, who represented Sweden at the ESC with the song If I Were Sorry . He reached fifth place in the final.

format

concept

For the fifteenth time, semi-finals will take place in different locations in Sweden. There are 28 entries, which are divided into 4 semi-finals, so that seven entries are presented per semi-final. In two voting rounds, the spectators decide who qualifies for the final and who can compete again in the Andra Chansen (German: Second Chance). In each semi-final, the first two entries with the most audience votes qualify directly for the final. Those contributions that take third and fourth place appear a second time in the Andra Chansen program. There the candidates then compete against each other in duels and whoever can collect the most audience votes qualifies for the final. In the final there will be 12 performers.

The producer of the Melodifestival 2016 was Christer Björkman .

Choice of contribution

From September 1st, 9:00 a.m. to September 16, 2015, 8:59 a.m., composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to SVT. From these 28 contributions will be selected. The selection is made according to the following selection process:

  • Half of the entries will be selected by the jury. Among the 100 entries judged by the jury are 5 songs from the submission process by unknown composers. This rule was introduced in 2016.
  • The other half of the contributions will be selected at the invitation of SVT. Among them is the winner of the talent show Svensktoppen Nästa 2015.

As in the previous year , at least 50% of all contributions had to be co-written by female composers. The final list of participants was published on November 30th at a press conference.

According to SVT, a total of 2,450 songs were submitted, 468 of them by composers who have not yet published their works. Compared to the previous year, 273 more entries were submitted.

Semifinals

First semi-final

Scandinavium

The first semi-final (Deltävling 1) took place on February 6, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. ( CET ) in the Scandinavium in Gothenburg and was moderated by Gina Dirawi and Petra Mede.

On February 4, 2016, the title Himmel för två by Anna Book was disqualified because it showed too strong musical similarity to the title Taking care of a broken heart by Felicia Dunaf . This was performed in 2014 at the Moldovan preliminary decision, O melodie pentru Europa 2014, and according to the authors, it was published by the broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova (TRM) without their knowledge . There was no substitute for the disqualified. Anna Book still presented her title out of competition.

With more than 4 audience votes, the first semi-final received more ratings than ever before in a semi-final. About 75% of Swedish television viewers watched the first program.
