Frans and the composers at the Melodifestivalen 2016

If I Were Sorry was written by Oscar Fogelström, Michael Saxell, Fredrik Andersson and the singer himself and released on February 28, 2016. On February 27, 2016, Frans took part in the fourth semi-final of the Melodifestivalen , the Swedish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , and won it ahead of Molly Sandén and the song Youniverse . He moved into the final, which took place on March 12, 2016. According to the jury vote, he finished second, one point behind Oscar Zia and the song Human . However, since he received the most calls in televoting, he was named the winner of the competition.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Since Sweden had won the Song Contest last year, the country did not have to qualify for the final in the semi-finals, but was directly represented in the final. On March 14, 2016, a draw was made for Sweden to have start number 9 in the final on May 14, 2016. According to bookmakers, Frans was one of the favorites to win the Eurovision Song Contest.

The song eventually reached number 5.

Allegations of plagiarism

There have been some plagiarism allegations since the song was released because If I Were Sorry sounds very similar to Matt Simons ' song Catch and Release . According to oikotimes.com , Matt Simons' record company PIAS Recordings is investigating whether the song is plagiarized. Henrik Nyström, the manager of the record company, said: “It is too early to say what will happen, but the songs are very similar to each other, that's for sure.” ( German : It's too early to say what will happen, but the songs are very similar, that's for sure. ).
