Yle Fem (German: Yle Fünf ) is the Swedish-language television broadcaster of the Finnish public broadcaster Yleisradio (Yle). The channel's primary target group are the Finnish Swedes , members of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland.
The channel began broadcasting digitally in autumn 2001 under the name YLE FST5 ( FST stands for Finlands Svenska Television ). Previously, the Swedish-language programs were integrated into the programming of the two main channels, TV1 and TV2 . In August 2006 the channel name changed to FST5 , which refers to the fifth program position in the Finnish channels. In March 2012 the name of the channel changed to Yle Fem , in which both the broadcaster (Yle) and the program number, written out in Swedish, ( Fem ) are expressed.
Yle Fem has been sharing the channel with the Swedish international channel SVT World since autumn 2011 . When Yle Fem is not broadcasting programs, SVT World's programming will be shown on the channel. However, Yle Fem has no control over SVT World's programs.
All non-Swedish programs on Yle Fem are broadcast with Swedish subtitles . In addition, Finnish subtitles are available for all programs, with the exception of children's, educational and news programs and live broadcasts. There are also Swedish subtitles for the hearing impaired for several programs.
Yle Fem broadcasts around 2,400 hours a year and reaches around 65% of its primary audience, the Swedish-speaking population in Finland, every week.
