The Euro Wings Europe GmbH is an Austrian airline based in Vienna and bases in Austria at the airport Wien-Schwechat and Salzburg Airport , and the Palma de Mallorca airport on the Spanish island and the Pristina airport in Kosovo . The Lufthansa subsidiary operates flights to international destinations. It is part of the Eurowings Group and a sister company of the German Eurowings GmbH , on whose behalf and under whose flight numbers it operates. The only externally visible distinguishing features are the Austrian aircraft registration number and the corresponding flag.

history

On December 3, 2014, the Lufthansa Supervisory Board approved the Wings concept. In August 2015, Eurowings Europe GmbH was founded in Vienna because the original plan was to have the Eurowings aircraft operated by Austrian Airlines crews .

Initially, two Airbus A320s were stationed in Vienna-Schwechat , with which flight operations began in summer 2016.

In September 2019, the Lufthansa Group announced a change in strategy for the Vienna location. Accordingly, from January 2020 the hub traffic in Vienna should be completely commercially responsible for Austrian Airlines and in the course of this some Eurowings routes should be taken over by Austrian Airlines. Eurowings Europe should operate four aircraft and crews for Austrian Airlines in wet lease in Vienna .

Bases

As of October 2019, four of the airports used by Eurowings Europe are designed as bases or "support points", at each of which at least one aircraft with crews is permanently stationed.

history

The first base was Vienna Airport with three aircraft stationed, the second base was Salzburg Airport in January 2017, initially with one aircraft stationed. On May 24, 2017, the airline opened its third and largest base in Spain on the Balearic Islands at Palma de Mallorca Airport, initially with four aircraft.

After Air Berlin ended , the Munich and Stuttgart bases were opened in Germany in 2017 , as the Eurowings Germany collective agreement at the time only provided for a maximum of 23 aircraft. However, German tariff conditions should apply at the base at Munich Airport . On March 26, 2018, the base at Stuttgart Airport switched to Eurowings GmbH. In December 2018 it was announced that Germanwings will take over the Munich base at the end of 2019. The operational change took place with the start of the winter flight schedule 19/20 on October 27, 2019. In return, Eurowings Europe took over the Pristina base from Germanwings in Kosovo .

Destinations

The first flights of Eurowings Europe took place on November 9 and 10, 2015 to Barcelona , London-Stansted and Palma de Mallorca and were initially flown with aircraft from the German Eurowings GmbH .

Eurowings Europe's flight operations in Vienna began in March 2016 with the summer flight schedule, which included connections to Spain, Corsica, Italy, England and Portugal.

As of May 2020, the Eurowings Europe fleet consists of 12 aircraft with an average age of 6.6 years:

total 12

Since March 25, 2020, all 12 aircraft in the fleet have been on the ground due to the massive drop in passenger numbers and the international flight restrictions caused by the corona pandemic .

criticism

Eurowings Europe was criticized for offering significantly worse working conditions than its German sister airline Eurowings GmbH. Among other things, there should have been different contracts with different salaries for the same job and a significant reduction in wages in the event of illness. These and other things were presented in an open letter from the staff to the management in Vienna.

Since October 1, 2018, there has been a collective agreement with the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions, Vida, which, with retroactive effect from March 1, 2018, ensures significantly better working conditions for flight personnel at the Austrian bases in Vienna and Salzburg.
