Long undercover

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lange Undercover was an investigative reporter program on the station Sat.1 , which mainly dealt with grievances in Germany whose origins can be found abroad. The program hit the headlines for alleged violations of journalistic due diligence and was canceled. The moderator and namesake of the format was the German TV reporter and journalist Daniel Lange .

Production and content

The format was produced by the production company META productions GmbH, which also produces the program Files - Reporters Fight for you . The long-time file reporter Daniel Lange was the namesake and presenter of the program, which Sat.1 aired over six episodes of 45 minutes each, between March and June 2014, on Tuesdays following the file reporters fight for you .

Despite the relatively late broadcasting time, from 11:15 p.m., the program achieved above-average audience ratings and received mostly positive reviews.

Initially it was assumed in the media that the Sat.1 try with the format, a counterpart to the successful RTL telecast team Wallraff to create. It soon became clear, however, that both formats had absolutely no parallels. Long reports were not shocked by the close to average audience, “ I'll never go there again! “Effect and unexpected revelations. His focus was more on uncomfortable topics, such as forced prostitution or work slaves, and characterizing victims as perpetrators in order to give this material greater relevance .

In June 2014, however, the broadcast was surprisingly canceled by Sat.1 after allegations arose of alleged violations of journalistic due diligence .

In the course of production, it concluded, inter alia filming in Lagos ( Nigeria ) and in the so-called Roma - Slum Shutka in Macedonia .

Criticism, allegations and clarification

In June 2014, the broadcaster Sat.1 received several anonymous reports accusing the Lange Undercover team of violating journalistic due diligence . At the same time, a number of bloggers, industry services and online media were anonymously informed that productions had been carried out over long distances in Lange Undercover. For the most part, this information has not been verified and has been widely distributed.

A later, extensive investigation by the broadcaster Sat.1 showed that only a moderation, a so-called "Aufsager", was filmed in the episode "Long undercover chasing the tug mafia" . All other allegations, some of them serious, could be completely refuted.

In the course of the previous reporting on the cancellation of the program, the impression was given that the allegations were directed against the moderator Daniel Lange , which was not the case. Neither the TV broadcaster Sat.1 nor META productions GmbH made allegations against him.

The events surrounding the Lange Undercover format have since been referred to as "Lange Scandal" in the media industry, as they led to the dismissal of the then managing director Olli Weiberg, the executive producer and editor-in-chief of the show Files - Reporters Fight for You , as well as all producers and editors, who were involved in the production of the format. The moderator and file reporter Daniel Lange resigned and left META productions GmbH. In several interviews he justified this decision with the fact that he did not feel adequately supported in the course of the information and investigation and emphasized that he was seriously disappointed with this behavior. He criticized the production company and the pressure built up by the Sat.1 channel during production. He also publicly addressed the topic of broadcasting requests , which was discussed in the media industry , with the aim of influencing TV broadcasters in the editorial and journalistic processes of format productions and reportage programs.
