The Melodifestivalen 2019 was the Swedish finals for the Euro Vision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ). It was the 59th edition of the competition organized by the Swedish broadcaster SVT . Overall, the competition lasted from February 2, 2019 to March 9, 2019. John Lundvik won with the song Too Late for Love .

format

concept

For the seventeenth time, the semi-finals will take place in different locations in Sweden. There are 28 entries, which are distributed over four semifinals, so that seven entries are presented per semifinals. The spectators decide in two voting rounds who qualified for the final and who can compete again in the Andra Chansen (German: Second Chance). In each semi-final, the first two entries with the most audience votes qualify directly for the final. Those contributions that take third and fourth place appear a second time in the Andra Chansen program . There the candidates then competed against each other in duels and whoever can get the most votes from the audience qualifies for the final. Twelve performers appear in the finale.

As in previous years, the producer of Melodifestival 2019 is Christer Björkman . After the worst audience average since 2011 was achieved in 2018, Edward af Sillén will be involved in the production of the Melodifestivalen together with Christer Björkman and Henric von Zweigbergk. Edward af Sillén was responsible for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 and 2016 . He was also involved in the production of the Melodifestival between 2009 and 2016.

On January 18, 2019, SVT announced that the voting system for 2019 will be changed again. The audience votes should now be sorted into different groups with points. Since the Melodifestivalen app has been able to vote in 2015 , there has often been criticism that the younger viewers would dominate the vote. To respond to this criticism, SMS voting will be abolished for 2019. According to SVT, there were hardly any people who voted via SMS. However, voting by phone should continue, so that from 2019 the audience votes will only consist of app voting and televoting. Overall, SVT will now sort the audience votes by age group. This is how the following eight categories come about:

Age groups:
  • 3–9 years
  • 10-15 years
  • 16–29 years
  • 30–44 years
  • 45–59 years
  • 60–74 years
  • from 75 years
  • Televoting
  • In the semifinals, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 point / s can be distributed per group. In the final, each group can then distribute 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points. In order to create a balanced relationship with the international juries in the final, their number will be reduced from 11 to 8. 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point / s are also awarded to each international jury. In the Andra Chansen program , each group can then distribute one point to their favorites. The interpreter with the most points per duel qualifies for the final. In this way, the system remains that in the semifinals and in the Andra Chansen round the spectators determine the result and in the final 50% of the audience and 50% of an international jury decide the winner. In the event of a tie, the artist with the most total votes wins.

In addition to this change, the beating heart, which appears in the left corner of the screen for each performance, will also be reformed. During the performance, the color of the age group that currently votes most frequently is displayed.

As the city of Östersund announced , it was requested in spring 2018 to host the Andra Chansen on March 2, 2019. However, the date collides with the Biathlon World Championships 2019 , which is to take place from March 7, 2019. The community asked for a time to think about it, but Live Nation Entertainment , which organizes the Melodifestivalen for SVT, has ruled out a venue in the city. The community is still interested in hosting in 2020. The community last held the Melodifestivalen in 2015 . The city of Lidköping applied to host a broadcast of the Melodifestival between 2019 and 2021. The city said that if they were awarded the contract, they would provide 700,000 crowns .

On September 12, 2018, SVT presented the venues for the Melodifestivalen 2019. As in previous years, two of the four semi-finals took place in Gothenburg and Malmö. As has been the case since 2013, the final was held in the Friends Arena in Stockholm. Leksand hosted the Melodifestivalen for the fourth time, Lidköping for the second and Nyköping for the third time.

In total, Melodifestivalen 2019 recorded 50,207,280 audience votes, which corresponds to an increase of 19.07% over the previous year. For the second time in a row after 2018, despite a successful start, the number of viewers up to and including the Andra Chansen show fell. With the video-on-demand service SVT Play, the number of viewers doubled to 150,000 to 200,000 viewers per broadcast.

    Choice of contribution

From August 31, 9:00 a.m. to September 17, 2018, 11:59 a.m., composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to the Swedish television station SVT. From these 28 contributions will be selected. The selection is made according to the following selection process:

    • 14 contributions will be selected from all submitted contributions.
    • 13 contributions are selected at the invitation of SVT.
    • The Lovers Of Valdaro received a starting place for the Melodifestivalen 2019.

As in previous years, at least 50% of all contributions must be written by female composers.

A total of 2,295 contributions were submitted to Swedish television, 476 fewer than in the previous year. This is the lowest number since 2015 .

A 15-member jury selected the 28 contributions for the program from all the entries.

    final

    Friends Arena
The winner of the Swedish preliminary decision: John Lundvik

The finals took place on March 9, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. ( CET ) in the 30,000-seat Friends Arena in Solna ( Stockholm ). The show was moderated by all four moderators. John Lundvik won the preliminary round after winning both the jury and the televoting. He received 96 points from the juries and 85 points from the spectators. For the third time in a row, an artist who took part in the Melodifestivalen for the first time last year won.

Benjamin Ingrosso, the winner of last year's Melodifestival, and the second-placed Felix Sandman, opened the preliminary round with their song Tror Du Att Han Bryr Sig . During the voting phase, a dance performance with the winning title Ingrossos, Dance You Off , took place. Charlotte Perrelli and Dana International sang their titles with which they won the Eurovision Song Contest. Then they presented a duet.

For the first time, the international jury consisted of eight members. For the first time, an interpreter received 12 points from each of the juries.

A total of 15,757,707 votes were received. A new all-time record for a finale and a broadcast of the Melodifestivalen.

3,610,000 spectators followed the finale of the Melodifestival, which means a total market share of 79.3 percent. In the advertising-relevant target group (20 to 59 years), the market share rose to 86.3 percent. The final was a little more successful than last year, but was still below the average number of viewers for the past 19 years. The number of views of the video-on-demand service SVT Play doubled compared to 2018.
