The National Ice Center (NAVICECEN / NATICE) is a research center for the study of navigational capabilities and analysis for the armed forces of the United States and allied nations, as well as for civil seafaring. It is maintained by the US Navy and thus by the US Department of Defense , the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration by the US Department of Commerce and the US Coast Guard of the US Department of Transportation . Founded in 1995, it has since mapped marine areas covered by sea ​​ice and observed icebergs drifting in shipping lanes .

The authority is based in Suitland, Maryland .

In the North Atlantic, the International Ice Patrol is responsible for monitoring the icebergs .
