The International Ice Patrol ( IIP ; German International Eispatrouille ) is a company that for the monitoring of icebergs in the North Atlantic is responsible. It was founded in 1914 after the disaster of the RMS Titanic (April 15, 1912). The IIP operated by the United States Coast Guard is obliged, in return for a proportionate reimbursement of costs, to issue appropriate reports on the iceberg situation in the North Atlantic to the countries that have signed a pact.

The current head of the International Ice Patrol has been Commander Gabrielle McGrath of the United States Coast Guard since 2013 .

Exploration

To explore the icebergs in the North Atlantic were initially two boats of the United States Coast Guard provided. The ships provided a valuable basis for sea rescue in the arctic waters and as early as 1914 the Seneca rescued the survivors of the lost third lifeboat of the steamer Columbian west of Sable Island. In 1931 a third ship for oceanographic observations in the Grand Banks area was put into service.

After the Second World War an aerial observation was intensified by the Coast Guard Argentia Air Detachment with its base in St. John's (Newfoundland) . From 1966 to October 1983, the headquarters and operations center were on Governors Island , NY, and were then relocated to Groton (Connecticut) . Since January 2009 New London (Connecticut) is the location of the International Ice Patrol . The aerial reconnaissance, meanwhile stationed on Prince Edward Island and at Gander Airport (Newfoundland), operates today with four Lockheed HC-130s from St. John's (Newfoundland).
