The X Factor is an American music casting show directed by Simon Cowell and produced by his production company SYCOtv . It is the US version of the British talent show of the same name , which has been broadcast on the local channel ITV since 2004 . The show started on September 21, 2011 on US broadcaster Fox . The presenter of the first season was the British Steve Jones , while in the second season Khloé Kardashian and Mario Lopez lead the show.

As part of the X-Factor franchise , the show's format has numerous differences from its competitors, including American Idol . Both solo artists and groups with no upper age limit can appear in the competition. Each jury member looks after one of four categories, girls between 12 and 30 , boys between 12 and 30 , people over 30 or groups (some of which are only formed from rejected solo artists after the casting phase). During the live shows, the jury members act as mentors for their category, assisting candidates with song selection, styling and staging of the performance, while judging candidates from the other categories.

The first season was won in December 2011 by the singer Melanie Amaro, who grew up in the British Virgin Islands .

production

Although American Idol has become a huge success and has been named the most watched show in its seven (November 2011) consecutive seasons, its original Pop Idol is not as successful in its home country Great Britain. After the extremely successful first season, she suffered a drop in ratings in the second. Many, including then-pop idol jury member Pete Waterman , described season two winner Michelle McManus as an unworthy winner for not achieving the same level of success as season one winner Will Young . In 2004, Pop Idol was discontinued and ITV announced it would develop a new casting show with former Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell, without the involvement of idol creator Simon Fuller . Audience ratings for the first seasons were mediocre, but rose to over 10 million a week by season seven in 2010. Pop Idol has long been forgotten in the UK in favor of The X Factor , while the US version of it was still the most watched show in the US.

In April 2009, reports surfaced that Cowell was planning to develop a US version of The X Factor after his contract with American Idol expired after the end of season nine. Under his contract at the time, Cowell was banned from establishing The X Factor as a rival alongside Idol . In September 2009, Fox , the broadcaster of Idol , signed a contract promising to broadcast the US version of The X Factor . On January 11, 2010, News Corporation , through Fox News in the US and The Times in the UK, reported that Cowell Idol would be leaving after the end of season 9 to bring The X Factor to the US in September 2011. He justified his decision on the Television Critics Association with the fact that he had to leave the show in order to serve as executive producer and as a jury member on the US version of The X Factor .

In November 2010, Fox began broadcasting short commercials for the show, including "Coming to America Fall 2011" (in German: Coming to America in the fall of 2011 ). The New York Times described the commercials as attempts by Fox to present the show as a television event. During Super Bowl XLV , Fox reveals the official logo for the show in a spot starring Cowell. A second spot that day featured Katy Perry , Justin Bieber , The Black Eyed Peas , Usher , Lady Gaga , the Pussycat Dolls and Madonna . This action sparked speculation about who will be on the jury next to Cowell.

The X Factor launched in the US and Canada on September 21, 2011, followed by the UK a day later and a handful of other states.

procedure

The aim of the casting show is to discover a talented vocalist whose talent is called the "X Factor" by the hosting television station. The winner will receive a five million contract with the record company Epic Records and is in a Pepsi - commercial , of the Super Bowl XLVI on NBC will broadcast to be featured. A season extends over five phases, the “audition for the producers”, then the “audition for the jury”, then the “boot camp”, then the “jury house” and finally the “live shows”. Applicants were divided into four categories in the first season, girls between 12 and 30 , boys between 12 and 30 , people over 30 and groups, and in the second season they were divided into teens , young adults , people over 25 and groups . From the third phase, each jury member takes on one of the four categories as a mentor for the candidates until the end of the season. In the first phase, all candidates must sing on a stage in front of the audience and the jury. The number of those who have made progress is further reduced in the joint boot camp phase. The third phase is the jury house, in which each mentor selects his eight best applicants, with whom he competes against the other participants and mentors in the subsequent live shows. The remaining participants sing songs in the live shows, mostly selected by the mentor. In the live shows, the two candidates with the fewest audience votes have to perform a song of their own choosing in a so-called "final showdown" (in German: final fight ). The jury decides with a simple majority which of the two is eliminated. Among the best three participants, only the audience will then decide on the progress and the winner.

season 2

On November 2, 2011, Fox extended the show for a second season. As the broadcaster announced in January 2012, it will undergo some changes. This also includes two new jury members and a new moderator, because Scherzinger, Abdul and Jones will no longer be there. In May 2012, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato were announced as new jurors. The broadcast of the second season began on September 12, 2012 with a two-hour show on Fox. Tate Stevens was named the winner.
