Samantha Sang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samantha Sang (* 5 August 1951 in Melbourne as Cheryl Lau Sang ) is an Australian singer . In the 1970s, at the height of the disco wave, she achieved an international hit with the title Emotion .

Career

Sang grew up in a musical family, her father Reg Sang appeared as a musician in the 1960s under the name Reg Gray . Under the name Cheryl Gray , Sang was already a teen star in her native Australia at the age of 15. Her single You Made Me What I Am was listed at number 8 on the Go-Set Top 40 hit list in 1967 . She was also a popular guest on various TV shows and was considered the little girl with the big voice . Her career stalled in the late 1960s and Sang traveled to Europe where she performed with the Hollies and Herman's Hermits .

In London, the pop star Barry Gibb became aware of Sang and introduced her to his manager Robert Stigwood , who finally signed her. With his brother Maurice , Gibb wrote the single Love of a Woman which was released in 1969 with Sang. Cheryl Lau Sang appeared from now on under the name Samantha Sang . However, the success failed and Samantha Sang returned to Australia where she released her album Samantha Sang and Rocked the World and other singles. For the feature film Bilitis she recorded the song When Love Is Gone and appeared in the musical The Magic Show .

In 1978 she met Barry Gibb again in Europe and they worked together again. The single Emotion , written by Barry and Robin Gibb , finally helped Sang achieve an international breakthrough. In the wake of the Bee Gees' enormous success in the United States, Emotion reached # 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The album of the same name, which was also created in collaboration with the Gibb brothers, made it onto the Billboard 200 and was awarded a gold record in 1978 . In Australia, Ireland, Canada and New Zealand, Emotion reached the top 10 hit lists. Samantha Sang was able to place two more singles in the lower ranks of the US charts, after which, after selling over 2,500,000 records, she did not have another hit listing. So Samantha Sang remained a one-hit wonder .

In 1979 she broke away from the Bee Gees and her third album, From Dance to Love, was released, which, however, could not begin to match the success of its predecessor and Sang returned to Australia. She worked with artists such as David Wolfert, Francis Lai , Carole Bayer Sager and Eric Carmen . Sang still sings live for a loyal fan base and is a frequent guest on Australian entertainment television.
