Hermann Grosse (prehistoric)

Hermann Grosse (born January 18, 1854 , † March 9, 1933 in Berlin ) was a German prehistoric scientist .

life and work

Hermann Grosse lost his father at an early age and was raised by his mother and grandparents in Wellmitz , Guben district . He was taught at the village school and from his grandfather, Pastor Gosche. He then attended the preparatory institute in Guben and from 1871 to 1874 the seminar in Neuzelle . From 1875 to 1882 he was a teacher at the Francke Foundation in Halle (Saale) at the preschool and at the girls' school. He also attended lectures with Karl von Fritsch ( geology and petrography ), with Christoph Gottfried Giebel ( comparative anatomy , zoology and natural history of mammals ) and with Gregor Kraus ( anatomy and physiology of plants ). From 1882 on he stayed in Florence to set up and run a German school . From 1884 to 1886 he was the tutor of Prince Nicola von Liewen in Tockenhof ( Kurland ). After his return to Germany he became a teacher in Gorgast im Oderbruch and from 1890 to 1921 he was a teacher in Berlin.

Grosse was a member of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory , since 1887 a member and since 1929 honorary member of the Niederlausitz Society for History and Antiquity , in whose journal Niederlausitzer Mitteilungen he published many articles on prehistory.
