history

From the first mention to the 21st century

Evangelical Church in Wellmitz

In 1300 Welmenicz was first mentioned in a certificate issued by Margrave Diezmann for the Neuzelle monastery . In 1370, Charles IV confirmed Wellmitz in a document as the founding village for the Neuzelle monastery.

In 1846 Wellmitz received a stop on the Lower Silesian-Märkische Railway .

In 1848, on the night of April 5th to 6th, a large fire destroyed 38 farmsteads in the village, and two people were also killed. The church of that time with its two clapboard-roofed wooden towers as well as the parish and school building burned down. Arson was suspected to be the cause, but this could never be finally clarified.

From 1848 the church was rebuilt on the foundation walls of the burned down church as a neo-Gothic brick building and consecrated in 1854 . As a formerly independent municipality in the Neuzelle district , Wellmitz became part of the municipality of Neißemünde on December 31, 2001.

Acting mayor of the place is Ursula Donner.

Atonement crosses

On the western wall of the cemetery there are four medieval atonement crosses. According to an old legend, the four sons of a large farmer fought over their father's property in the immediate vicinity of the churchyard. During the violent confrontation, the youngest child's legs were cut off; one had his right arm cut off and the third his head. The remaining fourth son, who inherited the economy, had three stone crosses set here. According to the legend, these are provided with reliefs: one stone has no legs (only the head, torso and arms can be seen); the other has only one arm; the head is missing on the third stone. In the wall of the churchyard there is a fourth cross with a chiseled sword.
A fifth cross reported by older sources has been lost.
