Ratzdorf ( Lower Sorbian Radšow ) is a place in the municipality of Neißemünde in the southeast of Brandenburg in the Oder-Spree district .

geography

Ratzdorf is located at the confluence of the Oder and Lusatian Neisse rivers near the Polish border and is a cul-de-sac village on an island in the valley of the Oder-Aue.

history

Ratzdorf was first mentioned in a document on June 4, 1316 under the name Razlausdorp. The Protestant church was built in 1958 by converting the former parish barn. On December 31, 2001, Ratzdorf formed the new municipality of Neißemünde with three other places. In 2002, Ratzdorf was named the “Sportiest Municipality in the State of Brandenburg”.

Or flood

The Michael Jackson Playground

Ratzdorf gained nationwide fame in 1997 when it was partially flooded by the Oder floods. The damaged dykes were then rebuilt and expanded. The construction work was completed in 2005. With EU funds, a European meeting center was built in the town - near the mouth of the Neisse. Michael Jackson donated 32,000 DM in 1997  to rebuild the school. However, since there was neither a school nor a kindergarten in Ratzdorf, a new children's playground was handed over to the community on June 19, 1998 with this donation and another one from the European meeting center of DM 17,000.
