Allard Hulshoff (born February 20, 1734 in Groningen , † July 30, 1795 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Allard Hulshoff was the son of Barend Hulshoff and Johanna Rozinga. He had attended Latin school in his hometown from the age of nine. In 1749 he became a student at the University of Groningen. Here he completed a medical degree under Leonard Offerhaus , Jakob Hendrik Croeser , Gualtherus van Doeveren (1730–1783) and Tiberius Lambergen (1717–1763). Nicolaas Engelhard (1696–1765) and Dionysius van de Wijnpersse had given him the necessary knowledge so that he received his doctorate in philosophy with a Latin treatise on the proof of the existence of a highly perfect being .

After continuing his studies at the University of Leiden and in Amsterdam , he decided to switch to theology in 1758. He completed training at the Mennonite seminary and continued his education with Tjerk Nieuwenhuis (1708–1759), Jacobus Krighout (1702–1770) and Abraham Arend van der Meersch (1720–1793). In 1758 he became a teacher of the Mennonite community in Makkum . From there he was transferred to Amsterdam in 1760, where he served as a preacher for thirty-five years.

In doing so, he had gained quite a reputation. After his death, forty of his sermons were published under the title Kerkelijke redevoeringen. (freely translated into German: ecclesiastical speeches. Amsterdam 1796). Even as a student he had appeared under the pseudonym Alethophilos Phileuselius with a treatise where he spoke out against Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz 's system. It was published under the title Beschouwing der Beste wereld of philosophische bedenkingen over Gods goedheid en wijsheid, de vrijheid der Menschen en hunnen Staat in dit en het toekomend leven (freely translated into German: The test of the best world or philosophical considerations about God's goodness and wisdom, Freedom from men and their state in this and future life. Amsterdam 1758).

These writings sparked widespread discussion in the Netherlands and were widely recognized. For his commitment to his negotiation over de zedelijke opvoeding: de vrijheid omtrent de onkunde en de beoordeeling van het bewijs voor Gods aanwezen uit de onvolmaaktheid onzer zelfkennis, opgegeven door Mozes Menselszoon (freely translated into German: treatise on moral education. Freedom on ignorance and the assessment of evidence of the presence of God in the imperfection of our self-knowledge, of Moses Mendelssohn given ), he received the medal of honor of the society of sciences in Haarlem .
