tourism

Makkum has been popular with windsurfers since the mid-1980s . On the one hand, this is due to its sandy beach, which is rare on the IJsselmeer. On the other hand, Makkum has a shallow area , which means that the water only reaches knee height until far into the sea, so that surfing beginners can practice safely. Today Makkum has several ports for sailing boats and a large campsite. The area around Makkum is used for agriculture. Along the IJsselmeer there is a well-known nature reserve with a large variety of plants and birds.

history

In the Middle Ages Makkum was called the “gateway to the Zuiderzee ”. The once sleepy fishing village grew into an important trading center with a heyday in the golden age of the 17th and 18th centuries . The city owes its prosperity, among other products, to the burning of high-quality lime . The distribution of this coveted commodity promoted the shipbuilding required for the transport .

In the course of the 19th century, Makkums became less important as a trading town, but it remained known for its shipbuilding and the manufacture of earthenware , such as the famous blue and white Delft tiles . In the 20th century, the construction of the final dike made it possible to improve the infrastructure for Makkum. Today, the "Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum", the oldest earthenware factory in the Netherlands, is a popular destination.

The Amels- shipyard in Makkum now part of the Damen Shipyards Group and is known for the construction of large luxury - and mega yachts .

On April 30, 2008 , the Queen of the Netherlands Beatrix visited the city to celebrate Queen 's Day.
