Le Freak is a song by the American band Chic from 1978. In the song, lines of English and French lyrics are mixed and the result is a disco sound typical for the time . The piece became an international hit.

Emergence

On December 30, 1977, musicians Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers received a call from singer Grace Jones asking them if she would like to meet them at the New Year's Eve party in Studio 54 in New York , where Jones was performing. When the two arrived at the backstage door of the club, the bouncer didn't believe them and rejected them with the words Fuck off .

Annoyed, they returned to Rodger's apartment, which was very close to Studio 54. They responded to their frustration with a spontaneous jam session , singing "Fuck off - Fuck Studio 54" to an improvised riff . Since they liked the sound and the melody immediately, they changed the text and made it “Ah, freak out - Le freak, c'est chic”. In the lyrics there is also the line “ just come on down to 54, find a spot out on the floor ” as a reference to the genesis.

Publication and Success

The single was released on September 21, 1978. The song reached number one in the charts in the United States , Australia , Canada and New Zealand . In Germany the piece came in fifth and stayed in the charts for four weeks. Le Freak has sold seven million copies worldwide.
