Appetite for Destruction (English for: " Appetite for Destruction ") is the 1987 debut album by the US hard rock band Guns n 'Roses . With world-famous songs like Welcome to the Jungle , Paradise City or Sweet Child o 'Mine and more than 30 million copies sold, it is one of the best-selling rock albums of all time.

background

The album was released on July 21, 1987 in the USA . Characteristic of Appetite for Destruction is the harsh sound of guitars, Slash's incisive solos and unadorned, raspy voice of W. Axl Rose . The cover Appetite for Destruction by the artist Robert Williams from 1978 caused a stir, as it a. showed an obviously raped woman. Since many record stores refused to sell the album with this cover, a different version was produced a short time later - based on the tattoo of Axl Rose on his forearm, which shows the faces of the band members as skulls, arranged in a cross. The copies of the album with the original cover are now considered a rarity and a sought-after collector's item. In the summer of 1988 the album reached number 1 on the Billboard charts. To date, Appetite for Destruction has sold more than 18 million times in the US alone. The RIAA estimates global sales are around 28 million copies. So it would be the most successful debut album of all time. In addition, it is now considered a classic in the history of rock 'n' roll.

In terms of content, the album deals with the hard early days of the band ( sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll ) and the life of the band members without perspective. This is how Mr. Brownstone treats the band's experiences with heroin . Welcome to the Jungle describes the urban jungle of Los Angeles , which Paradise City also addresses. Paradise City also criticizes the social system of the USA, the “dream” of the American way of life (“ Ragz to richez, or so they say ... ”) and the hopelessness of the younger generation.

In the list of the 500 best rock and metal albums published by the German rock-hard magazine in 2007 , Appetite for Destruction took place 171.

Song information

It's so easy

It's So Easy was released as the first single in June 1987.

Welcome to the jungle

Welcome to the Jungle is the second single from the album Appetite for Destruction . The video begins with a then still young and fresh-looking Axl Rose, who gets out of a bus with an upside down baseball cap and gets rid of a drug dealer (Izzy Stradlin). Then you see Duff McKagan, who appears as a stripper in suspenders, and Slash, who is sitting in front of the window of a television shop and gets drunk with Jack Daniels.

The majority of the video consists of television images depicting violence and a performance by the band in one of the rock clubs that were common at the time. Axl Rose wears the typical hairspray metal hairstyle at this gig (as a homage to the Finnish band Hanoi Rocks ) . This video tells a lot in pictures about the early years of the band, from life on the street to the excessive parties with numerous groupies.

In one key scene, Rose sits tied to a chair in front of a dozen television screens, desperately trying to break free. The monitors also show violence. At the same time as this scene, Axl Rose sings: “You know where you are? You are in the jungle, baby! You gonna die! "(English for:" Do you know where you are? You are in the jungle! You will die! ")

Sweet Child o 'Mine

In this music video, the band plays a performance in a warehouse. The special thing is that the film crew is shown at work and the scenes always change between black and white and color. In some sequences, the friends of the band members are shown, especially Rose's girlfriend at the time, Erin Everly , who is described in the song. The video was filmed in Huntington Park , California in mid-April 1988 .

Paradise City

In August 1988, the third music video, this time for Paradise City, was produced. Filming locations included Giants Stadium in East Rutherford ( New Jersey ) and Castle Donington in Great Britain . In the video, the band is shown at two different concerts, each of which is in contrast to one another, which is illustrated by the fact that z. B. the concert in New Jersey is shown in color and the performance in England is shown in black and white . Between these live scenes you can see the band in the backstage area, shopping in New York or rehearsing . In a short shot, Axl Rose shows a Wehrmacht emblem with an eagle and a swastika with the subheading "Access All Areas" - including another backstage pass. Before the next cut, Axl Rose nods to the camera.

My Michelle

The song is about Michelle Young, an ex-girlfriend of Slash. She drove singer Axl Rose to a gig when Elton John's Your Song was playing on the car radio . Young told Rose that she wished that someday someone would write a nice song about her. The band then wrote the song My Michelle , in which the listener learns, among other things, that Michelle's mother died and her father produced pornographic films.

Rocket Queen

Sex noises of a woman can be heard in the middle of the song. Axl Rose brought a woman into the studio to have sexual intercourse with her. Producer Michael Barbiero refused to direct the recording. So took Vic Deglio 30 minutes by the two and was then in the album credits than fucking assistant engineer called.
