The host of such an event (or broadcast) is known as a roastmaster .

history

The principle of humorous public “roasting” of a personality has a long tradition, especially in the United States. The concept became popular in the mid-1970s through the television program The Dean Martin Show . In 1973 the ratings of the show hosted by Dean Martin deteriorated and the so-called Man of the Week Celebrity Roast was introduced as a countermeasure . They quickly enjoyed great popularity with the audience and so after the end of the show with The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, an independent format was developed in which Martin devoted himself exclusively to roasting . The first show on the Bob Hope"Roasted" achieved good ratings and so further roasts were produced at irregular intervals until 1984 . The celebrities "honored" included Telly Savalas , Lucille Ball , Jackie Gleason , Sammy Davis, Jr. , Michael Landon , Evel Knievel , Valerie Harper , Muhammad Ali , Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra , Jack Klugman , Joan Collins and Mr . T .

In late 1988 Margaret Thatcher was honored with a roast by the outgoing Reagan administration .

From 1998 the television station Comedy Central produced and broadcast the annual roasts of the New York Friars Club , in which Drew Carey , Jerry Stiller , Rob Reiner , Hugh Hefner and Chevy Chase made themselves available as roastees . From 2003 the station produced an independent format with Comedy Central Roast . Denis Leary was the guest of the first show ; later followed by Jeff Foxworthy , Pamela Anderson , William Shatner , Flavor Flav , Bob Saget , Larry the Cable Guy , Joan Rivers , David Hasselhoff , Donald Trump , Charlie Sheen , Roseanne Barr , James Franco and Justin Bieber .

Outside the United States, there have been some attempts to establish an independent roast format , particularly in the United Kingdom . Sun launched Channel 4 in 2010, the format A Comedy Roast .

Restrictions

Typically, there are no restrictions on the subject of jokes on a roast, no matter how embarrassing they are for the roastee . Occasionally, the celebrities discuss any taboos with the other guests of the show in advance or have them cut from the show after the recording. Pamela Anderson forbade jokes about her hepatitis C infection and William Shatner forbade statements about the drowning death of his wife Nerine Kidd. Charlie Sheen , who had not imposed any restrictions before the recording, had a joke about his mother removed afterwards .
