Dave Thompson

David Gareth Thompson (* 1963 in Devon (England) ; pseudonym Dave Thomas ) is a British music journalist and author.

Life

Dave Thompson grew up in the UK. Impressed by the punk wave there, he brought out the first fanzines in the late 1970s . From 1980 to 1984 Thompson published 43 issues of the fanzine "TV Times". The articles, mainly written by members of a TV Smith fan club , covered TV Smith, the Adverts, and TV Smith's Explorers with Richard Strange , Doctors of Madness , The Lords of the New Church , Ian Mitchell Band, and Last Touch .

Thompson has lived and worked in the USA since 1989. He has published over 100 books since 1982. For the most part, these are the biographies of well-known artists such as Bono , David Bowie , Chris de Burgh , Duran Duran , Billy Idol , Eric Clapton , Kurt Cobain , TV Smith, Winona Ryder , Rod Stewart , John Travolta , Ron Wood or Bands like The Caves , The Cure , Cream , Depeche Mode , John's Children , Kiss , Nirvana , The Pogues , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Spandau Ballet , The Velvet Underground and The Who .

He wrote studies on rhythm and blues , soul , rock and pop music , punk , reggae , gothic and glam rock , or dealt with the creation of an album like The Joshua Tree by U2 . His book about Gothic Rock was translated into German by Kirsten Borchardt under the name Schattenwelt - Heroes und Legenden des Gothic Rock . His rock music expertise I Hate New Music was published in December 2008.

In recent years, Thompson has brought out some of his publications as e-books . In the early 1990s, Thompson wrote several records on stamps and coins, as well as a yearbook on football in the United States. His latest work, London's Burning: True Adventures on the Frontlines of Punk, 1976–1977 , from 2009 deals with the beginnings of the punk movement.

In addition to the books, Thompson writes for Rolling Stone , Spin , Melody Maker , New Musical Express , Goldmine , Metal Hammer and many other magazines.
