Black Forest Marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Black Forest Marathon is a marathon in Bräunlingen that has been held on the second weekend in October since 1968 . After the Essen marathon around the Baldeneysee and the Göltzschtal marathon, it is the third oldest marathon event in Germany, and the second oldest in terms of the number of events.

The program now also includes a half marathon , a relay marathon , a 5 km run, a 10 km run, 1.75 km and 1.05 km school run. He has been held since 2007 by LSG Black Forest Marathon e. V. The board of the association has been Frank Kliche since 2014 .

history

The Black Forest Marathon was launched in 1968 by SV Donaueschingen and TuS Bräunlingen. It was the first popular runner-oriented marathon in West Germany. The even older Tusem Marathon , which has existed since 1963 (later Around the Baldeney Lake ), was a club comparison match in its early years. One week before the Black Forest Marathon, the Göltzschtal Marathon was held for the first time in what was then the GDR - like the Black Forest Marathon, an event for people's runners.

From the beginning, a women's rating was included in the invitation to tender - making the Black Forest Marathon the first marathon worldwide that was also open to women. At that time there was still enormous resistance against women who ran long-distance races, and there were no national or international rules that could have given a women's marathon legal status. Only the year before had there been a scandal at the Boston Marathon when the race director tried to force the "K. V. Switzer “started to take Kathrine Switzer out of the race. Roland Mall, the organizer of the run, secured himself by setting the finish time extremely high at ten hours and simply "forgetting" the part of the tender that concerned the runners when applying to the German Athletics Association (DLV).

Of the approx. 600 starters, 51 women were at the start in Bräunlingen, 48 of which reached the finish.

After fears that women would not be able to cope with such a long distance also proved to be irrelevant in the next two years and the DLV made no move to take action against the start of women on its own, the organizers officially presented the for the 1971 event Application to approve the women's run. This was granted, and thus the DLV was the first of the international associations to allow women's marathons. 71 participants started and Elfriede Rapp won a few seconds ahead of Eva-Maria Westphal .

In 1972 there was another novelty at the Black Forest Marathon, when the participants began to record the participants' data electronically. At this point in time, more than 1500 runners were starting, which made the Black Forest Marathon the most popular marathon worldwide in those years when there were no city marathons.

When in 1975 the DLV announced a national marathon championship for women as the second association worldwide (after the USA) , it was awarded to Bräunlingen and thus recognized the pioneering role of this event. Christa Vahlensieck became the first German marathon champion with a course record that still exists today.

Until the mid- 1980s , the number of starters rose further to well over 2000 ( 1986 the finisher record was reached with 2321), but then fell due to the increasing competition from the newly created city runs , at times even to under 400 finishers. For a few years, the large lap through the Black Forest was replaced by a half-marathon route to be run twice. Since returning to a large circuit, however, there has been an upward trend in registrations.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), a large number of national and international running events had to be canceled. This includes the Black Forest Marathon in 2020 .

stretch

From the start in Bräunlingen at 700  m , you first walk towards the northwest. At the hamlet of Hubertshofen it goes into the forest and further and further west. Shortly before the Eisenbach district of Oberbränd you have reached an altitude of approx. 1000  m at km 17 . The route now runs at this altitude up to 25 km to the south until it turns east and mainly downhill leads first to the Brändbachtalsperre (Kirnbergsee) and then to the destination in Bräunlingen.

The half marathon route is identical to the marathon route in the first part and turns south at km 12 to the Brändbachtalsperre, where it meets the marathon route again. The 5 km run, which also starts on Sunday, initially heads west, on the Am Bruggacker road to the Galgenbergstraße junction, then turn right, parallel to the sand path to Röthenbach. Continue towards Waldhausen. After the confluence on the Riedweg after 480 m there is a fork, there take the dirt road. Again in the open area, after 850 m turn right and again on the Riedweg, back to the town hall. This is also the original way back at the marathon. The 5 km run is very well intended for beginners, the total of around five meters in altitude is barely noticeable. The 10 km run started the day before consists of a lap south of Bräunlingen and Hüfingen with a total of around 100 meters of altitude to be mastered .
