Universo Online ( UOL ) is an online service provider and internet provider. The company is listed in the IBOVESPA financial index . UOL is the leading provider in Latin America and the home page portal is the largest of its kind in Portuguese .
UOL was founded in 1996 as a joint project between the publishers Grupo Abril , which has since left, and Grupo Folha . UOL has expanded its leading position with the publications Veja and Folha de São Paulo .
The previously for Grupo Abril belonging BOL - a Portuguese-language Internet portal , Freemail -Anbieter and web host (the free offer "vilaBOL" is set to call for backup of Web sites and data, as of November 2012) - was initially to news portal of Grupo Folha which was later renamed Folha Online . BOL is hosted at UOL today .
UOL's competitors in Brazil are: Grupo Globo , owner of a leading Brazilian television network, with Globo.com , Terra from Telefónica , iG and iBest from Brasil Telecom and Oi-Internet (formerly Telemar ).
