Oi (formerly Telemar ) is a Brazilian telephone company and one of the largest in South America, with headquarters in Rio de Janeiro . Oi means “hello” in German.

Subsidiaries are Telemar and Brasil Telecom . The company has seventy million customers, is the fourth largest cellular operator in the country, and claims to have a debt of 65.4 billion reais (US $ 19.2 billion).

Since Brazil has been in an economic crisis, "Oi" is practically bankrupt. High expenditures for network expansion and takeovers drove Oi into bankruptcy. The landline and mobile network operator has been trying to keep operations going since summer 2016. Negotiations with the lenders had previously failed.
