Life

Costume of Rex Harrison in the film Doctor Dolittle (1967)

Aghayan was born in Tehran in 1928 to wealthy parents. His mother was a fashion designer, so he came into contact with fashion from a very early age. Aghayan became interested in American films from an early age. His family allowed him to study in America and so he first studied architecture in Los Angeles, but broke off this course after a few weeks and turned to studying acting. He directed and acted in plays and came across costume design by chance. For one of his directorial work there was no money for a costume designer needed and so Aghayan designed the costumes himself. From 1957 the Iranian worked for various television shows, for example in 1958 for An Evening with Fred Astaire or The Judy Garland Show in 1963. As 1967 was first awarded the Emmy television prize for best costume design, Aghayan and his partner Bob Mackie , with whom he worked for decades, received the award for the television film Alice Through the Looking Glass . For the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Aghayan designed the costumes for the opening and closing ceremonies. Between 1960 and 2001, Aghayan also advised the presenters of the annual Academy Awards on clothing issues.
